Physical Activity Campaign
During summer 2006, a resource directory of low/no cost physical activity resources in San Diego and Imperial region appropriate for Food Stamp eligible participants was developed. If you know of physical activity resource people or program, please click here to e-mail Larissa Johnson, the Network Physical Activity Specialist.

Do you need materials to conduct activities to get people moving?
We recently received a large supply of various materials that you can use for various activities.  Some of the materials include kick balls, jump ropes, cones and hula hoops.  Take a look at the inventory list to see if any of the materials may be of use to you.  If you would like to use any of the materials, fill out the Memo of Understanding and contact Larissa Johnson for any questions.

3) DARE TO BE FIT
Jake is Jake Steinfeld, aka Body by Jake, and he was at Pacific Grove Middle School on Wednesday to launch Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's youth physical fitness program, the Governor's Challenge.  He exhorted a group of students to do 30 to 60 minutes of exercise three times a week for a month.

General Mills Champions Grants:

Program is a Partnership of the General Mills Foundation, American Dietetic Association Foundation and President's Challenge. Fifty nonprofit community groups across the U.S. received grants totaling $500,000 from the General Mills Foundation to support pioneering programs that help children develop lifelong nutrition and physical fitness habits.

SMARTer Kids Grants for SMART Products:

The SMARTer Kids Foundation has been bringing education technology to classrooms around the world by initiating and sponsoring programs and research that support students, teachers and schools. Grants are available for varying classroom technology in the amount of 20% to 70% of the suggested price, and are awarded on a per unit basis for qualifying SMART product.

Mattel Children's Foundation:

Mattel and the Mattel Children's Foundation are pleased to continue our Domestic Grantmaking Program. Through this effort, unsolicited applications for funds for organizations benefiting children in the United States are accepted, pending the eligibility requirements and guidelines listed below. Charitable organizations that demonstrate they directly serve children may be eligible for grants of $5,000 up to $25,000. Funds may be applied to programs or general operating costs.

Highmark Foundation Announces School Challenge Program:

The Highmark Foundation, an affiliate of Highmark that supports initiatives designed to improve community health, has announced that it will award $1 million in total grants on a rolling basis in 2008 through the Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant program. Grants will be awarded to public, private, parochial, and charter schools in the 49 Pennsylvania counties served by the foundation.
The Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge is a grant program designed to support schools in the effort to introduce programs that will ultimately create healthier, more successful students. Grants will provide funding of programs addressing bullying prevention and self-esteem, in addition to nutrition and physical activity.
Grants will be awarded to schools quarterly in January, April, July and October. Applications for grants will be accepted all calendar year.
Schools are invited to apply for School Challenge grants by visiting the Highmark Healthy High 5 Web site.

Lowe's Charitable & Educational Foundation Supports Public School Projects:

Lowe's Charitable & Educational Foundation supports K-12 public school projects including clean-up, landscaping and painting; playground enhancements; and minor repair/renovation of public school buildings. Founded in 1957, the LCEF awards more than $3 million annually to schools and other diverse organizations across the United States. The Foundation provides funding in communities where Lowe's operates stores and distribution centers.
Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation requires that all applicants take a quick and easy [on-line] eligibility test to confirm that applicant needs match with LCEF guidelines. Organizations that pass will be considered, but not guaranteed a grant. Awards range from $5,000 to $25,000. Please keep in mind that Lowe's will not fund individuals and families, academic research, religious programs, one-time special events, advertising, sports teams or athletic programs, art-based programs, travel-related activities, capital or operating expenses, private schools, professional development, international programs, or tickets to events.
An on-line application is the only method for submitting a request to the Lowe's Foundation. There is a rolling deadline on a quarterly basis- you may apply now between October 16 - January 15, January 16 - April 15; April 16 - July 15; and July 16 - October 15.
